
Getting to the Heart of the Connection
When you’re running an industrial UV curing setup, that connection between the lamp and the fixture is way more than just a plug. It’s a precision point. We build our systems around two standards: G5 and G13. These bi-pin sockets are the backbone for compact and linear UV lamps, giving you a connection that’s secure and steady enough to handle the high current UV work demands. G5 sockets use two pins set 5mm apart. That small footprint is perfect for packing lamp arrays into tight spaces, like in a narrow-web printer or a compact curing chamber. G13 sockets, with their 13mm pin spacing, are built for longer, more powerful linear lamps—the kind you see on wide-format printing lines or big industrial coating setups.
Why the Pin Spacing Matters
Choosing between G5 and G13 really comes down to what the lamp needs electrically. A G5-based lamp usually runs at lower wattages, which keeps the pins from getting too hot in that small design. G13 sockets, on the other hand, are made for higher-wattage lamps that pull more current and generate more heat. That extra space between the pins helps keep things cooler and safer. It gives you better thermal isolation, lowers the risk of arcing, and keeps the whole connection stable over the long haul. Both socket types are built to take the heat. We use materials that can handle it—think ceramic or high-grade thermoset plastics. The pins are plated, too, so they stay conductive and resist corrosion, even after thousands of lamp swaps.
What This Means When You’re on the Floor
Out in the real world, G5 and G13 sockets make replacing a lamp simple. You can swap them out quickly without rewiring the whole fixture. But there’s a trade-off to keep in mind. The compact design of G5 sockets means there’s a limit to how much wattage they can safely handle. Push past that, and you risk overheating the socket and shortening its life. G13 sockets can handle more power, but they need more room. If your machine is tight on space, you might not have the clearance for a G13-compatible lamp, even if the power is exactly what you need.
